Pllek – a great place to get away from it all

Pllek on the NDSM Docklands terrain boasts one of the best panoramas over the river IJ. Owner Sjoerd Steenbeek started off with a few open shipping containers placed in the form of a horseshoe around a patio with a pebble beach on the riverside.

Pllek means place and this is a great place in the summer, teaming with non-bathing beach-goers. This winter the open containers have been built in with a huge glass front looking out over the water, turning it from an outdoor bar into a grand café.

Diners eat at picnic tables and on the beach there are reclining beach chairs and novel benches made from half a boat. Just old wrecks from Amsterdam’s canals sawn in half. There is an adjoining venue for parties, performances and conferences. But lots more goes on here. There is yoga for the early birds, improvisation classes for the culture vultures and tai chi workshops for the alternatives. If you want to get away from the busy and stressful city life, then this is the place to do it.

In the daytime, the huge window provides plenty of light as well as a breath-taking view of the city centre’s skyline. At night the city lights reflect in the water making the place all the more magical. The vast space inside is lit by candles and just a few lights – all that’s missing is a fireplace.

Pllek has an easy menu offering seasonal food, organic meat and sustainable fish. To find it take the NDSM ferry from Central Station or the Tasman street and head for the high crane on your right. Then bear right before you get to the ship launch slipway.

  1. Als ze de bediening ferbeteren, wordt het nog eens één van de beste plekken in Amsterdam om te chillen.

When they improve on the service of the personnel, this will be one of the best places in Amsterdam to chill out
