Go vintage in North Amsterdam

Everyone loves to find something unique to wear or something special for their home. Shopping is more fun when it is not more of the same. That is why vintage stuff is so popular. But it also makes more sense to reuse and upcycle disregarded articles from another era. You can create a new look, or give your home an authentic feel. It doesn’t have to cost a lot and it is kind of fun too.

Coming Soon : 28/29 May What is fashion? at Kaap de Goede Hoop (next to NDSM ferry landing)
and  28 May the opening of Zipper Wharehouse (both next to NDSM ferry landing)

The IJhallen is billed as the biggest flea market in Europe, twice a month, a couple of hundred Amsterdammers sets up their stalls in and around the old ship building halls of the NDSM wharf. Anything and everything is for sale at rock bottom prices. Entry is 4.50 euros, but once you have entered there are so many stalls you can easily spend a couple of hours bargain hunting. So take the NDSM ferry from Central Station and follow the crowds.

If the market doesn’t happen to be on when you visit the NDSM wharf, don’t worry there is plenty of vintage on sale in North Amsterdam. On the same quay next to where the free ferry docks, you will find Woodies at Berlin/Woodies Classic Boat Services. This is a vintage shop with a difference. Here you can find antique rugs, Polish light fittings, 1950s sofas, upcycled cupboards, you can also order made-to-measure design bookcases or have the interior of your boat completely refitted. Just moor alongside the shop.

Walk back down the quay and turn right after the MTV building on the TT Neveritaweg and keep going straight until you cross the Theo Fransman bridge next to café Noorderlicht. Continue past the camper park on the Papaverweg until you see two huge warehouses of Neef Louis and Van Dijk and Ko on your left. Enter into a walhalla of yesteryear. The two large halls are filled with vintage furniture, household articles, antique artifacts and industrial equipment from a different era. Van Dijk en Ko has a section dedicated to hand-made lampshades by the Gezusters Stoop (The Stoop Sisters). There is so much stuff it spills out into the courtyard.  If you are looking for something to give your home a unique rustic look, this is where you will find it. After all that walking, you may want to stop for a cuppa in the coffee bar at the back of Neef Louis.

Ready for more, cross the road and turn right at the corner of the Papaverweg/Ridderspoor and over the bridge on the Van Hasselt Canal West. Turn left onto the Distelweg and continue until you reach second-hand shop De Lokatie on the corner of the Asterdwarsweg. The stylish showroom is full of second-hand clothes, books & toys as well as low-cost household gadgets and furniture,  The shop gives employment to people who have difficulty getting a job for whatever reason and to the long-term unemployed. If you are on a low budget this is the right place to furnish your flat.

Carry on down the Distelweg and turn right into the Chrysanten Straat. Half way down the road is Blom & Blom.

The Blom brothers collect, restore, recondition and redesign furniture and light fittings from derelict factories in former East Germany. They are fascinated by the temps perdu.  Industrial items from abandoned eras can be used to give office spaces or homes an authentic ambiance. Every item has its own passport describing its history, so nothing is lost in time.

Double back to the Distelweg and turn left and continue until you reach the end of  the road. Take the ferry back across the river to the Tasman Straat. To get back to Central Station turn left and walk/cycle along the riverside.

Or turn right on the Distelweg and continue, crossing a bridge until you reach a big crossroads and turn right into the Van de Pek Straat. From 11 October, the Pek Market will hold vintage, antique, brocante theme markets on Saturdays. Then continue straight down the Van de Pek Straat to the Buiksloterweg until you reach the ferry taking you straight back to Central Station.

If you would rather a bit more up-market vintage, visit the A-Lokatie on the Buikslotermeerplein market square (opposite V&D) and while you are there pop into the Modestraat for a fashion fix.
